Spanish university scholarships 2026-2027: what's new
Spain's Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports has confirmed a record budget for 2026-2027 scholarships, with several changes that widen who can access them.
Scholarships and study grants for 2026-2027 have a budget of €2.559 billion, which according to the Ministry will benefit close to one million students. The application window for post-compulsory studies opened on 7 April and closed on 18 May, but it's worth knowing what's changed ahead of future calls or complementary grants that may still be open.
Medrano grants: studying in another city, with extra support
One of the most talked-about changes is the new Medrano grant, aimed at students who complete part of their studies at a university in a different Spanish city from their own. It provides at least €900 a month, support specifically designed for those who need to relocate to study the degree they want.
Grant for part-time enrolment
Until now, taking fewer credits than the standard course load could leave you out of the general grant. What's new for 2026-2027 is that university and higher artistic education grant holders enrolled part-time in 48 to 59 credits — around 20,000 students, according to the Ministry — will be able to receive the grant if they meet the other requirements.
Adjustments for students with disabilities
Around 2,000 university and higher artistic education students with a disability rating between 25% and 64% will see their academic requirements adjusted: full-time enrolment will be considered from 45 credits instead of the usual 60.
Fixed amounts and improvements for Ceuta and Melilla
For 2026-2027 the fixed amounts tied to income (€1,700) and residence (€2,700) remain unchanged, and the additional travel allowance for students from Ceuta and Melilla is doubled, rising from €442 to €888.
